Interview With Dr. Laila Faridoon, CEO OF THE NEW ECONOMY ACADEMY

Dr. Laila Faridoon’s journey at the crossroads of technology, business, and innovation showcases her resilience, visionary leadership, and unyielding dedication to empowering women. From her early fascination with technology, Dr. Faridoon has committed her life to leveraging tech-based solutions and promoting opportunities for women in STEM, now serving as the CEO of the New Economy Academy.

While growing up in the UAE, Dr. Faridoon observed the swift advancement of technology in society, igniting her curiosity to examine how it could address complex issues. “My inspiration stemmed from seeing firsthand how technology could drive transformation across sectors,” she says. This enthusiasm motivated her to pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science at Ajman University and, later, an MSc in Computer Science at the University of Sharjah. Keen to explore further, she sought a PhD in Big Data Analytics from King’s College London, preparing her to tackle both business and technological challenges.

Reflecting on her academic journey, she shares, “Each step of my education gave me new tools to approach problems strategically, making me see the potential of technology in tackling real-world challenges.”

Upon starting her career as a data analyst, Dr. Faridoon swiftly recognized the influence of data in making decisions. “Data offers valuable insights that shape business strategies,” she notes. In 2007, she moved into an IT PMO Manager position, where she discovered the significance of connecting technical teams with business executives. Her 13-year role as Executive Director of the Chairman’s Office at RTA Dubai allowed her to supervise groundbreaking projects in urban mobility, strengthening her conviction in the power of innovation in public service. “We weren’t just implementing technology; we were creating a more connected, efficient city,” she recalls.

Today, as CEO of the New Economy Academy, she helps businesses and individuals thrive in an ever-evolving economy. “My role allows me to guide others in navigating complex challenges while fostering a culture of innovation and learning,” she explains.

Key Leadership Qualities Behind Her Success

Dr. Faridoon credits her achievements to traits such as empathy, visionary thinking, and resilience. For her, empathy is foundational: “Understanding and connecting with people is fundamental to effective leadership. I developed empathy by actively listening, seeking to understand my team’s perspectives and challenges,” she says, emphasizing the importance of an inclusive environment.

Visionary thinking has also been crucial. By staying informed on industry trends, she inspires her team to keep pace with change. “A leader must envision the future and inspire others toward that vision,” she explains. “Continuous learning and forward-thinking have been key to aligning our goals with the evolving landscape.”

Resilience, meanwhile, has been essential in navigating high-stakes challenges. “Resilience isn’t about avoiding failure but embracing it as part of the journey. Each setback is a lesson that prepares you for the next step,” she shares, a mindset that has carried her through demanding roles and inspired her team.

Passion for Women in STEM: A Personal Mission

Dr. Faridoon’s advocacy for women in STEM is driven by personal experience and a commitment to bridging gender gaps. “Promoting women’s representation in STEM isn’t just about equity; it’s a critical driver of progress,” she explains. She believes that diverse teams lead to more innovative solutions, benefiting both organizations and society at large.

To create more opportunities for women, Dr. Faridoon highlights several steps such as; Early Education and Awareness, Mentorship Programs, Inclusive Work Environments, Leadership Development Opportunities, Visibility and Representation and Policy Advocacy.

Her work opens doors for women in STEM, creating a stronger foundation for diversity and innovation across industries.
Dr. Faridoon’s book, Looking Forward to the Bright Side, reflects her commitment to resilience and positivity. Inspired by her journey, the book combines life lessons with practical guidance on maintaining a forward-looking mindset, especially during challenges. “Setbacks and obstacles are inevitable, but how we respond can define our path,” she explains.

She also aims to support women in leadership roles. “I wanted to provide guidance for women on navigating challenges,” she says, adding that the book serves as a reminder that “with determination and self-belief, anyone can achieve their goals.”

To young women in male-dominated industries, Dr. Faridoon emphasizes self-belief, mentorship, and resilience. “Confidence is key. Embrace your perspective and remember that your voice matters,” she says. She also advises seeking mentors, staying curious, and building strong networks to gain support and collaboration opportunities.

“Setbacks and obstacles are inevitable, but how we respond can define our path.” 

“Expect challenges and setbacks,” Dr. Faridoon shares, adding that “each one is an opportunity for growth.” She encourages women to advocate for themselves and give back by mentoring others, creating a supportive community to amplify the impact of women in leadership.
